The cleantech, or environmental goods and services sector, broadly consists of companies that supply solutions that protect or enhance the natural environment. A wider definition is given below. If your company meets these criteria and you are based in or around Greater Peterborough, East Midlands or the East of England then you can join EnviroCluster to showcase your business and get free support.

Defining Cleantech

You may not consider yourself part of the environmental/cleantech sector, but generally-speaking you are part of the sector if the products or services you offer have one or more of the following advantages:

uses less energy or water than alternatives in their construction and/or operation
generates energy from renewable sources
prevents pollution or produces less pollution/emissions than alternatives
facilitates the treatment of airborne, marine or land-based contaminants
reduces waste and/or efficiently recycles or reuses resources
supports the recycling, waste management, water supply & water treatment industries
ensures products or buildings are designed sustainably over their lifetime
services that help businesses/individuals reduce their environmental footprint and become greener

EnviroCluster supports companies in the following cleantech sub-sectors:

Covers energy efficiency and energy generation. Technologies and services that reduce the demand for energy or create energy from renewable or low carbon sources. This can include energy derived from algae/biomass, geothermal sources, hydro power, nuclear, photovoltaics, wave/tidal power and wind.

This includes services and products which account for, and improve, sustainability of buildings and products and includes products which are ‘greener’ than other alternatives (i.e. they are more sustainable, have lower embodied carbon or are more resource efficient in their manufacture). Life cycle assessment services are also included in this sub-sector.

Solutions that remediate, reduce or prevent air, land or marine pollution. This includes vehicle emissions, carbon capture and storage, contaminated land reclamation and noise & vibration control.

Products and services which support the waste handling industry and which support recycling and reuse processes, energy recovery and digestion of organic material.

Solutions used in water supply and wastewater treatment processes, rainwater harvesting & water reuse systems and in the management of biosolids.

Cross-cutting “horizontal” sub-sectors

In addition to the sub-sectors listed above, EnviroCluster recognises two horizontal sub-sectors which cross-cut across the other sub-sectors. These are:

Electronic devices or services which have an environmental application. This includes smart technology, modelling, sensors, monitoring and other instrumentation.

Consultancy and environmental management/awareness services.
